Sanibel Island Fall Break 2016

After the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Ian, I revisited our pictures from our trip seven years ago. In 2016, I decided to scope out other beaches that were similar to Tybee with an old beach vibe, where you can ride bikes and explore without so much commercialization. I came across Sanibel and Captiva, and they did not disappoint. It was one of the most beautiful places we had visited.

While reminiscing about this lovely place, I was so mournful and sad. Sad that when I looked up the map of Sanibel to try to remember the exact places we ate, they all said "temporarily closed." Even the one-dimensional map felt broken and empty. I certainly pray that those devastated by Hurricane Ian will be able to rebuild their lives again. So much has been lost. I can't imagine the loss of Tybee, our favorite home away from home destination, though I know it is certainly possible in today's climate. I feel so much for those who lived there and those who made it their home away from home.

Gorgeous view from our screened-in porch.

We definitely enjoy riding bikes on Tybee and that was our number 1 thing to find when we looked for another location. The 25-miles of bike trails on Sanibel did not disappoint. They were flat and beautiful.

Some parts were shaded, and boy, were we thankful for that. We didn't bring enough summer attire thinking it would be less humid in October. That was a big NO. It was still very Florida-like in the weather department.

Campbell loves to fish and fishing off the pier in Tybee was always something he and his friends did. Fishing at the shore was an experience that he really enjoyed.

Right after this picture was taken, the saltwater catfish flexed and spiked Campbell's hand. He still has the shards of the fish in one spot. Needless to say, his day was fairly ruined. Essentially, it burns like mad and there is nothing you can really do to make it better.

I sure enjoyed those sunrise fishing days with him.

We were so excited to find so many shells! They were everywhere! And you didn't have to be the first one out in the morning to find them.

Of course, we spent a lot of time eating some great food. I wasn't as focused on documenting all of the food in 2016 as I am now, but here are two highlights.

Doughnut run always.
House made key lime pie from The Mucky Duck on Captiva.

The Mucky Duck had a gorgeous setting right on the sand overlooking the water. So sunset time was the sweet spot.

It's so sweet to see these two in pictures from back in the day. They are the best siblings I know. Campbell has a kind heart and would do anything for his sister. Elaine is a spitfire and loyal to the bone. Don't mess with her brother.

My girl. Always.

I am so thankful we got to experience Sanibel Island. I have a heavy heart for the people who are suffering there today. Paradise does exist in many places on this big, beautiful Earth. That makes the heartbreak so much harder. How can something so magnificent be so completely devastated?
